February 21st, & February 28th, 2009

The Darwin Center for Science and Reason presented a one-hour dramatic performance of Darwin’s life that starred Dr. David Campbell as Darwin. The play told Darwin’s story from his voyage of the HMS Beagle to his death, discussing the discovery of the principle of evolution. A unique performance, Dr. Campbell became Darwin without a script using the “Method Acting” technique, and had been doing so for four years running, with over thirty performances and a ten-part TV series.

Duquesne’s Red Masquers brought to life a satirical comedy by playwright George Bernard Shaw that explored the themes of eugenics, religion, and useful productivity in a modern society. The play told the story of several British subjects, together with local natives, striving to build a perfect society on an island paradise. Shaw lampoons just about every social convention from marriage to vegetarianism to war - with the Rapture thrown in for good measure!
