Did you know that horses used to be smaller than some birds? Visitors to this Exploration Station discovered the evolution of the horse by observing horse feet. Teen docents used four specially-made replicas of horse feet dating as far back as 55 million years ago to demonstrate how the horse’s foot has adapted to the changing climates in North America. Visitors picked their favorite foot and created a clay imprint to take home.

The replicas were created in partnership with the Pittsburgh company Mechanimal. Discover how they were made >>

Horse evolution was also at Equustravaganza at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History >>
